What is a Pilates Purist? Discover Classical Pilates
The term “Pilates Purist” might sound like it carries an air of exclusivity, perhaps even elitism. But let me assure you—it’s anything but. In a world where the “Pilates Princess” aesthetic dominates social media, complete with pastel matching sets, sleek reformer studios, and influencers blurring the lines between student and teacher, the true essence of Pilates has been buried under layers of trendiness. The heart of Pilates, as envisioned by its founder, Joseph Pilates, is far more inclusive and grounded. It’s a practice designed for everyone, not just those who can afford the latest athleisure or a boutique studio membership.
Joseph Pilates created his method, originally called Contrology, to empower individuals to take charge of their physical and mental well-being. In 1945, he published Return to Life Through Contrology, a book that remains widely available today for less than $15. This slim paperback outlines the mat exercises that form the foundation of Pilates, offering a roadmap for anyone to practice at home, no equipment or fancy studio required. Joseph’s vision was clear: Pilates is for everybody—every body, every background, every budget. It’s a semi-autonomous practice, meaning you can (and should!) work with a teacher for guidance and corrections, but you’re also encouraged to memorize the exercises, take ownership of your practice, and make Pilates a part of your daily life. The beauty of this approach lies in its balance: you can attend classes—whether in a studio or online—and complement them with your at-home practice to progress toward more advanced levels.
That’s where I come in. By calling myself a Pilates Purist, I’m not gatekeeping or claiming superiority. I’m simply honoring the original intent of Pilates: a transformative, accessible practice that prioritizes function over flash. At my virtual studio, Pilates Purists, I strip away the noise—the overpriced leggings, the Instagram filters, the trendy jargon—and focus on delivering real, effective Pilates tailored to your needs. My mission is to help you build a practice you can rely on, whether you’re in a studio with me or alone on your living room floor. Want to get started? Follow me on Instagram, where I share Accessible At-Home Pilates videos that break down the entire mat order, one exercise at a time, completely free. It’s my way of making Pilates as approachable as Joseph intended.
Being a Pilates Purist means respecting the classical work that has transformed countless lives, including my own. I’ve experienced its power firsthand, and I’ve seen it work wonders for my clients. There’s something magical about the consistency and discipline of the original mat exercises—a common thread that delivers strength, mobility, and resilience. I believe everyone who wants to practice Pilates deserves to feel that transformation, no matter their fitness level or financial situation.
For me, Pilates has been a lifeline through some of life’s toughest moments. When my self-confidence crumbled after a grueling ballet career that took a toll on my body and spirit, Pilates welcomed me back to myself. It helped me feel at home in my body again, rebuilding my strength and sense of self. When chronic overuse injuries and whiplash left me weak and in pain, Pilates restored my strength and erased my discomfort. When I moved to a new city, feeling lost and untethered, Pilates met me on the mat, offering familiarity and grounding. And when cancer and chemotherapy ravaged my body, Pilates was there to help me reclaim my wholeness. This practice isn’t just about sculpting a strong core (though it does that brilliantly). It’s about longevity—physical, mental, and emotional. It’s about showing up for yourself through life’s highs and lows, knowing your practice will carry you through.
